Are there
any cases of PCB poisoning in your country, for
example like the incident of Kanemi cooking oil
syndrome in Japan. |

Canada |
No case on an equivalently
large scale.
Prior to 1980, there have been cases of contaminated
grain as a result of the use of PCB- filled electomagnets
leaking over grain conveyor belts. It is reported
that Department of Agriculture inspectors identified
the problem and all contaminated grain was detained
within the facility until it was properly destroyed.
A further incident occurred in 1979 as a result
of contamination at a US rendering plant that
imported product into Canada. This resulted in
the recall, detaining and destruction of primary
produce and second-generation products.
PCBs in electromagnets used in handling food
were banned in 1980.

YES. Kanemi Yusho
Case (Kanemi cooking oil syndrome case)
In Japan, Kanemi Yusho Case took place in 1968.
The rice oil contaminated with PCBs caused serious
damage to people who consumed the oil. Previous
to Kanemi Yusho Case, there was an incident that
PCB contaminated oil killed massive number of chicken.
It is said that if the PCB use in the process of
food making were prohibited at this point, Kanemi
Yusho Case could have been prevented.
In Kanemi Yusho Case, 14000 people claimed to have
been damaged. However, only 1871 people were certified
as victim clients. Later, Kanemi Yusho Case was
recognized also as a case of PCDF poisoning. The
government is planning to change the standard of
certification. At this point, there are victims
who are not certificated as victims and so are not
receiving proper relief(aids). |
