Japan Offspring Fund (JOF) Monthly Newsletter
March 2005, No.191

* Protecting your children A number of alarm devices are sold to help children feel safer. Loud sounds can surprise and delay a molester, making escape easier. Japan Offspring Fund tested the devices. We also give advice on other methods for protection, including mace (spray), and discuss security cameras and other home security systems. After several unsettling incidents recently in Japan, it seems important to ask: what is really working and what is just giving a sense of false security?

* No cure for baldness Japan Offspring Fund investigated the claims of several popular hair-tonic makers. Several products include ingredients with dangerous side-effects. RiUP, Gush, Aderans and Artnature are exposed as ineffective at best. Side-effects such as nerve cell damage and severe skin problems from strong chemical peeling substances are good reasons to avoid these expensive products.

* Antibiotics poster Japan Offspring Fund steps up the campaign to rid our foods from antibiotic resistant bacteria. After the successful release of JOF's video, we now also publish a B3 format poster (in Japanese). The poster is a good educational tool for day care centers, schools, hospitals and other public places. Educating people about how to stop the overuse of antibiotics in both human medicine and the food industry is the goal. Cost: 250 yen.
