Why PCB Pollution Continues

Waste dumping sites can also be polluting sources.

PCB wastes that are not yet treated should be stored properly; those that are lost may be, in the end, carried into waste dumping sites where they cause new problems.

Not only rubbish but also harmful chemicals are treated at waste dumping sites; to prevent pollution of soil, ground water and air, waste control and monitoring is necessary.

In developing countries, we often find rubbish fires set either intentionally or occurring spontaneously. When PCBs are burned in such dumps, they can break down into dioxins and other toxic pollutants.

Moreover, in developing countries, there are people who scavenge for usable articles from dumps or drink the milk of cows that have grazed on grass in the area of waste dumping sites. These people are exposed to pollutants and are at high risk of being harmed. Waste dumping sites should be regarded as a source of pollution and must be monitored.
