Survey of Consumer Consciousness on PCBs Issue

Need Education How to Dispose PCBs

  • When asked what consumers will do, if products containing PCBs are at their backyard, almost half of the respondents replied "going to learn how to safe dispose these products".
  • A quarter answered they will dump out the PCB wastes promptly.

More Evidences Should Be Submitted by the Industry

  • Presently it is almost impossible to get a remotest outline of the total amount of PCBs residuals in Korea.
  • "The industry, who has used PCB more than once, is enforced to supply relevant data and evidences to the authorities concerned."

Test on PCBs Pollution of Shells and Clams
2002.10(By CACPK & Lab Frontier)

Methodology

  • Period of Inspection: Oct.13 -Dec. 20, 2002
  • Sample Collection: 5 major shopping centers; (Hyundai, Lotte, Shinsegye, E-Mart, Kim's Club)
  • Samples : 3 mussels, 5 oysters, and 2 (short-necked) clams
  • Quantitative analysis(LH-PCB-004)

Findings -1

  • PCBs were detected from 8 examples out of 10. (PCBs detection percent reached astounding 80%!)
  • From all examples of clams and mussels were PCB's detected.
  • In case of oyster, PCB's were not detected from 2 of all 5 examples

Findings -2

  • The most amount of PCBs detected was 4.70 ug/kg, while the least amount of PCB's detected was 2.39ug/kg.
  • But the quantity of PCBs detected was below the permitted limit laid down by the US government(2000 ug/kg) or Japanese Government (3000 ug /kg).

Korean Government's Answer
  • National Environmental Institute(a subsidiary institute of MOE) plans to make an overall survey to get exact data on the amount of PCBs waste in 2003.
  • PCBs wastes, like transformers used out from local generators, amounted to 1 metric ton in 1999, and 167.4 ton in 2000 respectively.
  • And these were all exported to Netherlands.

Action Proposal

  1. Statistics on PCBs should be compiled as soon as possible.
  2. Provide consumers regularly with information.
  3. Inform consumers of safe disposal methods
