Dioxin Contamination of Ashes in the Asia-Pacific Region (2000)

| Introduction | Objectives/Samples | Results | Conclusion |

Results

This table (table 2) shows concentration, I-TEQ value, and WHO-TEQ value. From all samples of ashes, Dioxins were detected. Concentration levels were 0.44 to 1100ng/g. WHO-TEQ values were in the range of 0.0072 to 14 ng/g. Comparison

The levels came out to be unfortunately or fortunately, not higher than those already reported. However, it is important to pay attention to the fact that the concentrations of some samples were quite high.

In Japan, Ministry of Health and Welfare's standard for Dioxin levels of ashes of incinerators is 3ng-TEQ/g. Three Japanese samples and one Peru sample were beyond this standard. If these ashes were reclaimed, there rises a concern about environmental pollution around the landfill sites. Since Dioxins are not easily broken down, and gets accumulate in the environment, even if the contamination of ashes is below 3ng-TEQ/g, we still have to worry about the big adverse effect it has on the environment.

Also, the effects on humans and animals must be worried. With the co-operation of Dr. Mitsugu Sakabe at Kitazato Laboratory, we tested whether or not the extracts of ashes have endocrine disruption effects. As a result, we found out that extracts of ashes act the same as estrogen hormones and also has toxicity to immune systems. We must be cautious of the danger that exists around the handling sites of industrial wastes.
